If you are ever roadtrippin across the country chances are you haven’t booked a hotel room up ahead, you just plan on winging it. A good tip for finding a very reasonably priced hotel is to look for a stadium or venue just off the interstate. Chances are that the stadiums are not in the main “hotel row” of a town but a little more secluded. The little known secret is that most of these venues are not used as much during the summer (especially weekdays).
Hotels know that people are willing to pull off the interstate in hotel row willing to look for a place to stay but the hotels just a little further up the road or in town by a stadium don’t see much traffic. Look for these stadium sign on the interstate and follow them. I can promise you that hotels near the Fargodome in summer are usually pretty empty compared to those in hotel row. For the one or two days a week these facilities get used they sit empty and open for all traffic. Stroll into the closest hotel and negotiate a reduced rate if the parking lot looks empty.
Remember to take a minute to figure out where most people will be staying and go to the other end of town. Hotels by venues are usually nice with plenty of restaurants nearby and as long as their isn’t a concert you’ll find some great prices. Nothing helps you sleep better than saving money.
